Dr Paul De Cinque is Chair of Brass and Music Education at the University of Western Australia’s Conservatorium of Music. His teaching role at the Conservatorium includes co-ordinating and teaching units in Music Education, teaching classes in brass studies and trumpet studio, and teaching a unit in community music. He also conducts the Wind Orchestra, Brass Ensemble, and Trumpet Choir. Previously, Paul held a teaching position at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada.


Paul holds a doctorate from the University of South Carolina and a master’s from the world-renowned Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. In the United States, Paul studied conducting with Scott Weiss and Stephen W. Pratt. He received his undergraduate degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from the University of Western Australia. Prior to his post-graduate studies, he taught classroom music, brass instrumental lessons, and conducted ensembles at a number of schools, including both the Gifted and Talented Music programs in Perth City. He is also the former Director of Music at Penrhos College, a leading private girls’ college in Perth.

Paul has several articles to his credit, including a peer-reviewed article in the leading band journal, the Journal of Band Research and articles in the WASBE Journal, Canadian Winds and The Instrumentalist. His wind ensemble transcription of Paul Hindemith’s Ragtime is published by Schott Music, and his works for school band are published by Brolga. Paul has adjudicated at band and orchestra festivals, conducted honour bands, and led band clinics in both Australia and North America.

 Paul is an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board in Western Australia. He has conducted a range of ensembles in both academic and community settings. He is the current conductor of WA Brass and Canning City Brass, two community music bands in the Perth area. In the past, he has conducted seasons with the ABODA(WA) Winds, the WA Youth Symphonic Band, and the WAYO Philharmonic Orchestra. He has extensive experience with community wind ensembles and brass bands, having conducted WA Brass to a number of State A Grade titles. Paul is a passionate advocate for youth and community music, and continues to work closely with the Western Australian Band Association.
